It's 4:42 p.m. and you're still on the same email. The third revision. The fourth. You read it aloud. You change just to only. You change only back to just. The email is fine. The hypothesis: shipping at roughly 70%, with pre-defined criteria, produces more real progress than polishing to eliminate the risk of being seen as imperfect. Not because the work is sloppier. Because the body, given a finish line drawn in advance, can finally cross it.
The signal: output exists daily. Less rumination. Clearer decision rules for what counts as done.
What you do for 7 days
Each day, pick one task you'd normally over-polish.
Before starting:
During:
- Work only toward the bullets. Anything outside them is a different task, for a different day.
When the criteria are met:
- Ship it. Stop. Even if you have time left.
Daily capture (two minutes):
- What I shipped.
- The three bullets I wrote.
- What I feared would happen if I shipped at 70%.
- What actually happened.
- One decision rule I discovered today.
What this experiment grows
It is not lower standards. It is the muscle of a body-felt finish line. Most chronic over-polishing is a nervous system that has never been given a clear, advance-defined enough. Three bullets, written before you start, become a contract the body can verify. The relief of shipping at 70% isn't because the work is shoddier โ it's because, for the first time, enough arrived from somewhere other than exhaustion.
Curiously, by day five, the three bullets get sharper without you trying. You start writing the kind of bullets that actually describe usable work. The skill being built isn't lowering standards. It's naming standards in advance.
