Sunday afternoon. Nothing on the calendar. The morning was unstructured, the kids are at grandma's, the partner is out for a walk. By 4pm, a low-grade unease has arrived. I haven't done anything today. Said with embarrassment, because of course rest is fine โ€” and yet the unease keeps firing.

It's not laziness shame. It's something more precise. It's the I noticing that whatever it has been defined by lately is not currently active. The unease is identity-vacancy, not character flaw.

You probably have an I am _____ you've been running on for years and never named.

What "identity axis" means

Inside the energetic catalogue, identity isn't who you are forever. It's what the I is currently defined by โ€” what your body would, in this season, register as identity-vacancy if it were withdrawn.

Lose the ability to produce: a Doer collapses. Lose the place in the relational web: a Connector collapses. Lose the role of holder-of-the-system: a Guardian collapses. Lose recognition: a Performer collapses.

Four axes. Most people run a primary one for years and a secondary that shifts by season. None of them are who you are. They are what the I in this chapter of your life is held by. The Sunday-afternoon unease is the season's primary axis asking to be confirmed.

The Doer

Defined by: output. Production. The line of evidence the body can point to and say I made this today.

Mechanism. The Doer organizes the day around evidence of having moved. Mornings start with anticipatory math โ€” what did I ship yesterday, what will I ship today, what does today mean if I ship nothing? The body cannot tell the difference between an unproductive day and a day the self did not exist.

Tell. The first opening of a phone in the morning is a check on yesterday's output. A weekend without a tangible win produces low-grade unease by Sunday evening. Rest feels like the thing I'll do once the work is done โ€” and the work is never done.

Where it leaks: Hollow success, Morning anxiety, Money tightness.

The Connector

Defined by: relationship. Being known. Being someone in someone else's circle of people-who-matter.

Mechanism. The Connector reads aloneness as identity-vacancy. If no one needed me today, was I here? The phone is checked not for output (Doer) but for who reached for me โ€” a DM, a tag, a request. The inbox can never fully close because the inbox is proof the relational position is still occupied.

Tell. A day without inbound messages feels like having become invisible. Pre-emptive over-responding โ€” answers arrive before the message has fully settled. The no costs the most when it is to a relational request, regardless of the content.

Where it leaks: Family squeeze, Witness deficit, Triage trap.

The Guardian

Defined by: protection. Holding-the-system-together. Being the one who notices what could go wrong.

Mechanism. The Guardian reads idleness as abandonment of watch. If I stop watching the system, the system collapses โ€” and the system is whatever combination of business, family, household, partner's wellbeing has been installed as their territory. The off-day is felt as referendum on whether the system needed the watching all along.

Tell. Sunday afternoon slides into work-checking. Vacation produces guilt that isn't about missed work โ€” it's about the unwatched domain. The body cannot stop fully because full stop would reveal whether the watching mattered.

Diagnostic note: Guardian often hides beneath Doer. A practitioner presenting as a Doer who also names a "if I stop everything stops" fear is usually a Guardian wearing Doer clothing. Output-fear is Doer; collapse-fear is Guardian.

Where it leaks: Shutdown, Off-day guilt, Invisible burnout.

The Performer

Defined by: recognition. Visibility. The curated version that lands in the public field.

Mechanism. The Performer organizes the day around the broadcast and its return. If no one saw the move, did it happen? The post that didn't land, the talk that didn't get reshared โ€” each is felt as a small identity-erosion. The unpolished version has not yet been issued an ID.

Tell. The first check after publishing is for visible response, not for usefulness. Edits run beyond utility โ€” the 14th pass is not for the reader; it is for the Performer's certainty that the broadcast was worth being seen. Being known and being good at the work register as the same axis.

Where it leaks: Hollow success, Narrative drift.

How to spot your axis

  • Finish this without thinking: I am _____. The answer is the axis. A builder / someone who gets things done โ†’ Doer. A friend / mentor / parent / the one who shows up โ†’ Connector. The one who holds it together โ†’ Guardian. A writer / coach / voice / the one who shows up online โ†’ Performer.
  • Where does the Sunday-afternoon unease come from? From not-yet-having-produced (Doer), from not-being-needed (Connector), from the unwatched system (Guardian), from not-being-seen (Performer). Whichever discomfort matches the actual felt-sense, that's the axis.
  • Which prescription would you resist most as not-what-you-came-for? A Doer resists identity-update before productivity. A Connector resists being-witnessed-without-earning-it. A Guardian resists the off-day. A Performer resists the no-broadcast week. The resistance names the axis.
  • Why this is the disambiguator

The same protective pattern (e.g., Pleaser) means different things in different identity-states:

Same Pleaser; four different leaks; four different experiment shortcuts. The identity axis is the disambiguator โ€” the lens through which every other axis (set-point, phase, protective pattern) is read.

A cruelty-reading guard, before we close

The frame is a diagnostic instrument, not a label. The instruction "you are a Performer" weaponizes. The instruction "in this season, the I appears to be defined-by-recognition" opens. Tell yourself, and tell others, what is defined-by-in-this-season โ€” not who they are.

This is especially important for the Performer axis: surfaced cold to someone who has organized their public self around recognition, the naming feels like rank, not diagnosis. Surface only when the practitioner has named the discrepancy themselves.

Where this lives in the pain pages

The axis is what the rest of the reading reads through โ€” phase, set-point, the pattern that keeps repeating. The chart, if you want it, confirms the shape underneath. But the axis comes first, and it comes from a sentence you can finish in one breath.
